Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
What Is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a procedure that rejuvenates the eyes by removing or repositioning excess skin, muscle and fat around the upper and/or lower eyelids. It is one of the most popular facial surgeries because it restores a refreshed, youthful appearance and can also improve vision if droopy eyelids obstruct the field of sight.
What Can Blepharoplasty Change?

What to Expect During the Procedure?
Blepharoplasty is typically performed under local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of surgery.
- Upper eyelid surgery – Incisions are made within the natural eyelid crease, allowing removal of excess skin and fat with no to minimal scarring.
- Lower eyelid surgery – Incisions may be placed inside the lower eyelid (transconjunctival) or just beneath the lash line, depending on whether fat removal, fat repositioning or skin tightening is needed.
The procedure usually takes 1 to 2 hours and can be combined with other facial surgeries if desired.
Risks & Safety
As with any surgery, blepharoplasty has potential risks, including:
- Bleeding or infection
- Dry eyes or irritation
- Temporary blurred or double vision
- Difficulty closing the eyes completely
- Scarring or changes in eyelid position
These risks are manageable when performed by a skilled, board-certified surgeon in a properly equipped facility.
What Does Recovery Look Like?
A typical recovery timeline includes:
- Week 1: Mild swelling, bruising, and irritation. Stitches are typically removed within 5 to 7 days.
- Week 2: Bruising and swelling improve significantly, and most people feel comfortable returning to work or social activities.
- Weeks 3–4: Eyes continue to heal, with subtle swelling resolving. Makeup can help conceal minor discoloration.
- Months 3 onwards: Final results become visible, leaving the eyes looking more open, youthful, and refreshed.
